How ZIP-code sales tax lookup actually works

A combined sales tax rate is never a single number set by one government. It's a stack: a state rate, layered with whatever a county, city, and special district (transit authority, stadium district, tourism improvement district) each choose to add on top. ZIP codes were built by the Postal Service to route mail efficiently, not to follow city or county lines — so a single ZIP frequently straddles two or more of those taxing boundaries.

That's the honest limitation behind every ZIP-based sales-tax tool, including this one: most of the time a ZIP maps cleanly to one rate, but where it doesn't, a tool that reports only a single number is quietly wrong for some of the addresses inside that ZIP. This calculator surfaces the split instead of hiding it — when the official data shows more than one rate inside a ZIP, both ends of the range are shown alongside the headline figure.

Where the data comes from

The Streamlined Sales and Use Tax Agreement (SSUTA) requires each member state with local sales taxes to maintain rate and boundary databases (SSUTA §§305 and 307), and the Governing Board publishes the resulting "Rate and Boundary" files. Those files are the source for every ZIP-level figure on this page; nothing here is scraped, estimated, or interpolated. States refresh their files ahead of each calendar quarter and post corrections mid-quarter when a local jurisdiction changes its rate. The dataset behind this calculator was last pulled 2026-11-02.

Want the full picture for one state instead of a single ZIP? These pages list every city, county, and district rate we derive from the same official files:

Some states charge one statewide rate with few or no local add-ons, so a city table would repeat a single number. Their pages cover what is exempt, how cars are taxed and the local exceptions instead:

For everything outside those 24 states, SST doesn't publish an equivalent free ZIP-level file, so the calculator falls back to the state's statewide base rate and labels it explicitly as a base rate only. It never invents a local add-on to fill the gap. For several non-SST states we publish full local rate tables from each state's own official source instead — see California sales tax rates by city (CDTFA), Texas sales tax rates by city (Texas Comptroller), Florida sales tax rates by county (Florida DOR), Arizona sales tax rates by city (Arizona DOR), Illinois sales tax rates by city (Illinois DOR), New York sales tax rates by county (New York Tax Department), Colorado sales tax rates by city (Colorado DOR), Missouri sales tax rates by city (Missouri DOR), Alabama sales tax rates by city (Alabama DOR) and South Carolina sales tax rates by city (South Carolina DOR). For state-level reference pages, see California, Florida, and Texas. Two more non-SST states have too few local rates for a table, so the calculator states them directly: Pennsylvania is 6% everywhere except Allegheny County (7%) and Philadelphia (8%) (Pennsylvania DOR), and Virginia is 5.3% except 6% in Central Virginia, Hampton Roads and Northern Virginia, 6.3% in 8 other localities and 7% in James City County, Williamsburg and York County (Virginia Tax).

Worked examples

Three real ZIP codes, computed live from the official dataset — a plain single-rate hit, a second plain hit, and a ZIP that genuinely spans more than one rate.

ZIP Area Combined Rate Range
98101 Seattle, WA 10.550% —
43215 Columbus, OH 8.000% —
84101 Salt Lake City, UT 7.450% 7.450%–8.450%

84101 is the range case: the headline 7.450% is the lowest combination present in the ZIP, while some addresses inside it are taxed up to 8.450%. It also carries a separate groceries/drugs rate of 3.000%, lower than the general rate.

Frequently asked questions

Is the rate shown the exact rate for my address?
It's the exact rate for most ZIP codes — but not all. A single ZIP code can span more than one taxing jurisdiction (a city line, a special transit or stadium district, a county boundary), so two addresses that share a ZIP can legally owe different combined rates. When SST's ZIP+4 layer shows more than one rate inside a ZIP, this tool shows the full range as well as the single headline figure, so you know when to double-check with a specific street address rather than the ZIP alone.
Why does the headline rate show a range for some ZIP codes?
Because the ZIP genuinely contains more than one tax rate. Under the Streamlined Sales and Use Tax Agreement (SSUTA §305), a member state must assign the lowest combined rate in a nine-digit ZIP area, and may assign the highest, lowest or blended rate to a five-digit ZIP area that contains more than one rate. This calculator leads with the LOWEST combined rate present in the ZIP as its headline figure. Where SST's more granular ZIP+4 boundary layer shows a different rate for part of the ZIP, we surface that as a min–max range underneath, e.g. Salt Lake City's 84101 spans 7.450%–8.450%. Only a full street address pins down which end of the range applies.
Which states does this cover at the ZIP level?
The 24 states that publish official ZIP-level rate and boundary files through the Streamlined Sales Tax Governing Board (23 full member states plus Tennessee as an associate member): Arkansas, Georgia, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Michigan, Minnesota, Nebraska, Nevada, New Jersey, North Carolina, North Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma, Rhode Island, South Dakota, Tennessee, Utah, Vermont, Washington, West Virginia, Wisconsin, Wyoming. For the other 21 sales-tax states — including California, Florida, Texas, and New York — SST doesn't publish an equivalent standardized free file, so this tool falls back to the state's statewide base rate and says so explicitly rather than guessing at a local add-on.
How current is the data?
The dataset was last refreshed 2026-11-02, sourced directly from the official SST rate and boundary files published at streamlinedsalestax.org. SST posts updated files ahead of each calendar quarter and issues mid-quarter corrections as jurisdictions change their rates; this site re-fetches on the same cadence, so the figures here should track the SST publication schedule closely rather than a fixed annual snapshot.
Does this include grocery and drug rates?
Where SST publishes a food/drug rate that differs from the general combined rate for a ZIP, this calculator shows it as a separate line — for example 84101 (Salt Lake City) has a general rate of 7.450% but a groceries/drugs rate of 3.000%. When no separate figure is shown for a ZIP, SST's data doesn't record a food/drug carve-out different from the general rate there.
