IRS RMD Table for 2027

The IRS tables that set your 2027 required minimum distribution: Uniform Lifetime divisors by age, the Joint Life table for a much younger spouse, the Single Life table for heirs, who is due in 2027 by birth year, and the 2027 deadlines. Every number comes from the same engine constants as the RMD calculator.

2027 Uniform Lifetime Table (ages 72–100)

The table almost every account owner uses. Divide your December 31, 2026 balance by the divisor for your 2027 age; the "% of balance" column is the same number as a withdrawal rate. These divisors have not changed since 2022, so they match the 2026 RMD table.

2027 RMD deadlines

Deadline Who it applies to
April 1, 2027 Born in 1953 and delaying your first (2026) RMD: the last day to take it. Your 2027 RMD is still due by December 31, 2027.
December 31, 2027 Every 2027 RMD except a first-year one: anyone born in 1953 or earlier.
April 1, 2028 Born in 1954: the latest date for your first (2027) RMD. Waiting until then puts two RMDs into 2028.

The April 1 delay is only for the very first RMD (the "required beginning date"). It moves that withdrawal into the next tax year, where it lands on top of the second year's RMD. Two years of distributions on one return often push retirees into a higher bracket or an IRMAA tier, so most are better off taking the first RMD by December 31. The first RMD deadline calculator handles the still-working exception for employer plans.

2027 RMD table by year of birth

Your RMD age for 2027 is the age you reach on your birthday in 2027. Under SECURE 2.0 the start age is 73 if you were born 1951–1959 and 75 if you were born 1960 or later.

Joint Life table: spouse more than 10 years younger

If your spouse is the sole beneficiary for all of 2027 and is more than 10 years younger, use the Joint Life and Last Survivor Table instead. It is a grid of both ages, and its divisors are larger, so the RMD is smaller. An excerpt for owners aged 73–85 with a spouse aged 54–62, with the Uniform Lifetime divisor for comparison:

Single Life Table (inherited accounts)

Beneficiaries who may stretch distributions over their life expectancy (a spouse, minor child of the owner, disabled or chronically ill person, or someone not more than 10 years younger than the owner) use this table, starting from their age in the year after the owner's death and subtracting one each later year. So does any other designated beneficiary of an owner who died on or after the required beginning date, for the annual RMDs in years 1-9 of the 10-year window; when the owner died on or after that date, the divisor is the longer of the beneficiary's or the owner's remaining life expectancy. Penalty for missing a 2027 RMD

A shortfall triggers a 25% excise tax under IRC §4974, reduced to 10% if you correct it within the correction window and file Form 5329. The missed RMD penalty calculator works out both, and the reasonable-cause waiver route.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a new IRS RMD table for 2027?

No. The life-expectancy tables in Treas. Reg. §1.401(a)(9)-9 apply to every distribution year from 2022 on, and Treasury has not revised them since, so a 2027 RMD uses the same divisors as a 2026 one: 26.5 at age 73, 24.6 at 75, and so on. What does change each year is which birth years are due, and the balance you divide (December 31, 2026).

Who has to take a first RMD in 2027?

People born in 1954. They turn 73 in 2027, so 2027 is their first RMD year, and they may wait until April 1, 2028 to take it. Anyone born 1955–1959 starts at age 73 in a later year, and anyone born 1960 or later starts at 75, which first happens in 2035.

What are the 2027 RMD deadlines?

April 1, 2027: the last day for a 2026 first RMD that was delayed (born 1953). December 31, 2027: every other 2027 RMD, including the second one for anyone who used that April 1 delay. April 1, 2028: the latest date for a 2027 first RMD (born 1954).

What percentage of my IRA do I have to withdraw by age?

The RMD percentage is 1 divided by your Uniform Lifetime Table divisor. For 2027 that is 3.77% at age 73, 4.07% at 75, 4.95% at 80, 6.25% at 85, 8.20% at 90 and 11.24% at 95 of your December 31, 2026 balance.

How is my 2027 RMD calculated?

Divide the account balance on December 31, 2026 by the divisor for the age you reach on your birthday in 2027. A $500,000 balance at age 75 divided by 24.6 gives a $20,325 RMD (4.07% of the balance).

When do I use the Joint Life and Last Survivor Table?

Only when your spouse is the sole beneficiary of the account at all times during the year (a death or divorce during the year does not break this) and is more than 10 years younger than you. The joint divisor is larger, so the RMD is smaller: at owner age 75 with a spouse aged 60, the divisor is 28.3 instead of 24.6, and a $500,000 balance needs $17,668 instead of $20,325.

What's the penalty for missing an RMD?

A 25% excise tax under IRC §4974 on the amount you should have withdrawn but didn't, reduced to 10% if you correct the shortfall within the correction window and file Form 5329. A reasonable-cause shortfall can be waived by attaching an explanation to Form 5329 once the missed amount is distributed.

Do Roth accounts have RMDs?

Roth IRAs have no lifetime RMDs for the original owner, and since 2024 neither do designated Roth accounts in 401(k) and 403(b) plans. Inherited Roth accounts still have distribution deadlines, usually the 10-year rule.
