Frequently asked questions
What are the 2026 age-based LTC premium deduction limits?
IRC §213(d)(10) caps how much of your long-term care insurance premium counts as a deductible medical expense, based on your age at year-end. For 2026 (Rev. Proc. 2025-32 §4.27), the limits are $500 for age 40 or under, $930 for ages 41–50, $1,860 for ages 51–60, $4,960 for ages 61–70, and $6,200 for age 71 or older. For 2025 (Rev. Proc. 2024-40), the five corresponding limits are $480 / $900 / $1,800 / $4,810 / $6,020.
Is there a cap on the self-employed above-the-line LTC deduction?
Yes. IRC §162(l)(2)(A) caps the self-employed health/LTC insurance deduction at your net profit from the business carrying the policy — it cannot create or increase a business loss. A self-employed filer with a small net profit may only be able to deduct up to that profit amount above the line, even if the age-based premium limit is higher.
Is this the same as the LTC per-diem benefit exclusion?
No — this calculator covers premiums you PAY, which is a different question from benefits you RECEIVE. If you hold a per-diem (indemnity) LTC contract, IRC §7702B(d) separately caps how much of the daily benefit PAYMENT is excludable from income: $420/day for 2025 (Rev. Proc. 2024-40) and $430/day for 2026 (Rev. Proc. 2025-32). Benefit payments above that daily limit (net of actual care costs) can become taxable income — a separate calculation from the premium deduction modeled here.
