IRS standard mileage rates by year

The IRS sets the business rate annually (medical/moving tracks it; the charitable rate is fixed by statute at 14¢). 2026 rates are from IRS Notice 2026-10.

Tax year Business Medical / moving Charitable
2026 72.5¢ 20.5¢ 14.0¢
2025 70.0¢ 21.0¢ 14.0¢
2024 67.0¢ 21.0¢ 14.0¢

Worked example — 12,000 business miles (2026)

A self-employed contractor drives 12,000 miles for business in 2026 and uses the standard mileage method:

12,000 miles × 72.5¢/mile = $8,700

That $8,700 is deducted on Schedule C — no need to track gas, insurance, or depreciation separately. You must choose the standard rate in the first year you use the car for business if you want the option to switch methods later. Parking and tolls are deductible on top of the mileage rate.

Frequently asked questions

What is the IRS mileage rate for 2026?

The IRS standard mileage rates for 2026 are: 72.5 cents per mile for business use, 20.5 cents per mile for medical or moving purposes (qualified active-duty military), and 14 cents per mile for charitable organizations (IRS Notice 2026-10). For 2025, the rates were 70¢ business, 21¢ medical, and 14¢ charity.

Who can deduct mileage on their taxes?

Self-employed individuals and independent contractors can deduct business mileage on Schedule C. Employees cannot deduct unreimbursed mileage under current tax law (the miscellaneous itemized deduction for employee business expenses is suspended through 2025). Medical mileage is deductible on Schedule A if you itemize and your total medical expenses exceed 7.5% of AGI. Charitable mileage is deductible on Schedule A if you itemize.

Should I use the standard mileage rate or actual expenses?

You can choose either the standard mileage rate or the actual expense method for each vehicle. The standard rate is simpler — just track your business miles and multiply by the IRS rate. The actual expense method requires tracking all vehicle costs (gas, repairs, insurance, depreciation) and multiplying by the business-use percentage. You can switch methods year to year for owned vehicles, but leased vehicles that start with the standard rate must stay with it for the entire lease.
